Looking Back to Look Forward
Our Annual Looking Back to Look Forward Lecture is delivered this year by journalist and broadcaster Jonathan Freeland. Guardian columnist and successful thriller writer under the name of Sam Bourne, (latest To Kill the Truth), Jonathan is also the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The Long View, in which stories from the past shed light on the present. That makes him a firm believer in the value of history as a guide. But faced with huge divisions in our nation, what if the very notion of an agreed historical record is in question? And what if future generations will be less able to learn the lessons of history – to look back to look forward – thanks to a combination of post-truth politics, changes in communication and powerful forces committed to a new denialism?
